What We Do

Drug Free Sport NZ (DFSNZ) has established the following general priorities within their strategy to provide a doping free environment for New Zealand Athletes.

Enforcement

Testing

Testing continues to remain the core component DFSNZ's anti-doping programme and a minimum number of tests is necessary to achieve a broad deterrent effect. This athlete testing is conducted all over the world whereever NZ athletes compete and/or train.  Testing provides the clearest evidence of the level of compliance of athletes at a given point in time.

The primary role of testing is to deter but the increasing sophistication of the planning substantially increases the potential to detect the use of prohibited substances. Whilst fewer target tests may be carried out these are much more precise in relation to who they are aimed at, when they are applied and which type of test is most appropriate.

All testing is required to be conducted in compliance with mandatory WADA International Standards and in line with the best international practice, DFSNZ maintains an ISO Certification as an independent check that all procedures meet those standards.

Investigating

The role of investigative work in catching people involved in doping is growing rapidly as testing can never be a perfect tool for identifying all doping behavior.  DFSNZ conducts investigations when necessary.  This investigative work is a crucial part of DFSNZ's anti-doping programme. It utilises such things as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NZ Customs, there is also a collaboration with Medsafe and a Private Investigation company is used to provide assistance as necessary.

Education

Informing

All those subject to the anti-doping programme must be informed of the requirements so that they can understand and comply with them. Education encompasses awareness, information services, resources (athlete leaflets)  and education seminars. The education programme conducted by DFSNZ is focused on ensuring that all athletes and support staff have a clear understanding of their rights and responsibilities.  Education is focused on current drug testing rules, the current WADA Prohibited List and the implications and the rationale for drug testing in their sport. Communication with key support personnel such as coaches, medical professionals and management provides ongoing education opportunities for the sports community.

Nurturing

The New Zealand sports community takes pride in its clean image and DFSNZ seeks to preserve and reinforce this culture at all levels of sport. Several initiatives have been created that are aimed at building a community of clean athletes who feel supported and encouraged to compete to the best of their ability and to act as guardians of the future of New Zealand sport. Outreach Programmes, special events and media interaction are all a part of this aspect of DFSNZ's  work in this area.

Research

Social research projects and stakeholder surveys seek to measure the trends in New Zealand sport and the effectiveness of our programmes.

Influence

DFSNZ is bound into the WADA World Anti-Doping Programme both through the Sports Anti-Doping Act and it's status as a Signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code.  Because of this DFSNZ is pro-active in trying to influence the WADA programme to ensure that, as closely as possible, it reflects the needs of the NZ sporting community.  DFSNZ regularly makes submissions on International Standards as they are developed and/or amended.  DFSNZ also contributes to the Regional Anti-Doping Organisation (RADO) in Oceania, the global Association of National Anti-Doping Organisations (ANADO) and an inter-governmental agreement on collaboration (IADA).
