Check Supplements or Herbal products

Drug Free Sport New Zealand (DFSNZ) recommends you check the status of supplements before they are used Fotolia 4599030 XSor distributed.

If a product is legal it does not mean it is permitted in sport.
Before purchasing a new supplement:
  1. Read the label.
  2. Complete an enquiry form for DFSNZ to check the supplement.
  3. Contact DFSNZ to assess the risk before taking a new supplement.

Examples of prohibited substances found in supplements:

As a reminder some stimulants may be available under several other names, for example “methylhexaneamine”, sometimes presented as dimethylamylamine, pentylamine, geranamine, Forthane, 2- amino-4-methylhexane, geranium root extract or geranium oil.
  • Methylhexanamine -  The stimulant “methylhexaneamine” (which may be described, like many other substances, by other chemical names) is included in the Prohibited List as a Specified Substance. This substance is now often marketed as a nutritional supplement and may frequently be referred to as “geranium oil”, "geranamine", “geranium root extract” or "geranium stem".
  • Dimethylamylamine (DMAA) Special Attention:  Temporary Class Drug Notice has been issued  and all products containing this chemical have been removed from shelves and can no longer be sold over the internet or in stores in New Zealand from 9 April.
  • Octopamine/Citrus Arantium - provided the levels are no higher than would be found in foodstuffs there is no practical problem with octopamine.
  • Tribulus - claims to elevate testosterone levels, this may cause an increased T/E ratio in a doping control test and lead to an anti-doping rule violation.
Important to remember
  • Always check new products even when they are from a familiar brand.
  • Products that claim to be permitted should still be checked. WADA does not certify or guarantee the safety/purity of any supplements.
  • If you are uncertain check before you buy.
  • If using a dietary supplement (i.e. Creatine) consult a sports dietician.  Use caution with products labelled with a “Blend “of ingredients as you will not know for certain what you are taking.

Colostrum Statement From WADA

“WADA recommends extreme caution with colostrum (which contains IGF-1) since some studies consider that IGF-1 ingested orally can influence the plasma level of IGF-1, which could consequently trigger an adverse analytical finding.  Please note that it is not in WADA’s mandate to endorse or regulate dietary or nutritional supplements. We do not control the quality or the claims of the supplements industry. For more information on supplements we invite you to consult WADA questions and answers on dietary and nutritional supplements.
