If an athlete requires treatment with a medication that falls under the Prohibited List a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) may be granted by a TUE Committee to give that athlete permission to use it.
TUE Applications
The WADA Code requires athletes to comply with strict processes if they require treatment with a prohibited substance or method. There are certain criteria that must be met for granting a TUE.
-
The athlete would experience significant health problems without taking the prohibited substance or method.
-
The therapeutic use of the substance would not produce significant enhancement of performance.
-
There is no reasonable therapeutic alternative to the use of the otherwise prohibited substance or method.
Before applying for a TUE please check the level of athlete section below.
Level of Athlete
There are specific requirements for TUE applications depending on the level the athlete competes at.
Summary:
-
International Level Athletes - In an International Federation RTP or competing at an IF ‘International’ designated event, a TUE must be applied for directly to and have had approval granted by the IF of that sport before competing. International Federations websites
-
Athlete in DFSNZ RTP or NTP - Are required to apply directly to and have had approval granted by DFSNZ for a TUE prior to competing.
-
All other National Level Athletes - Require a TUE from DFSNZ (athletes that qualify for specific 'National' Champs - see attachments) National Level Athlete Chart
-
Non National Level Athletes - Do not need to apply for a TUE prior to being tested. However, if they are tested and an Adverse Finding occurs they will be required to apply for a TUE retro-actively (after the fact) which must show that they were using the medication for legitimate medical treatment.
