Marijuana Policy

From 1st January 2004, Drug Free Sport NZ applied the WADA Prohibited List and listed under the category 'Cannabinoids', marijuana will be tested for in competition in all sports.

All users of marijuana must be aware that traces may be detected many weeks after taking it, particularly for those who have been heavy or long time users.

It is listed as a 'specified substance' which means that it is possible to get a lighter penalty for the first offence.

Drug Free Sport NZ is responsible for applying the World Anti-Doping Code in New Zealand. This Code is the internationally agreed set of rules and requirements for anti-doping work and, with respect to elements such as the prohibited list, is mandatory. Drug Free Sport NZ has recently made submissions to WADA with regards to the banned list and the code. These submissions contain the views of Drug Free Sport NZ and the New Zealand sporting community. They each contain sections that make statements in regard to the inclusion of cannabis on the prohibited list. These submissions can be viewed below.
