Therapeutic Use Exemptions
Substances on the WADA Prohibited List require a Therapuetic Use Exemption for athletes to use them.
There are two types of TUE's 1. Abbreviated TUE 2. Standard TUE Note: If you have been designated as an International Level Athlete by your International Federation (IF), and/or compete internationally, then you must apply to your IF for all TUE's. All other athletes should apply to Drug Free Sport NZ. Abbreviated TUETo be used for inhaled Beta-2 Agonists and non-systemic Corticosteroids. (Please note that this form is not to be used for Prednisone, see the Standard TUE section below). Failure to supply the Abbreviated TUE before a drug test is an anti-doping violation. The following substances will require an Abbreviated TUE (forms can be downloaded at the top of the page). If a medication is not listed below or you are unsure, contact Drug Free Sport NZ on 0800 DRUGFREE (0800-378-437). Inhaled Asthma Medication Relievers such as Airomir, Asmol, Bricanyl, Foradil, Oxis, Respolin, Salbutamol, Serevent, Symbicort, Ventolin. CHANGE FOR CORTICOSTEROIDS FROM JANUARY 1, 2006. From January 1, 2006, topical corticosteroid preparations when used for dermatological, aural/otic, nasal, buccal cavity and ophthalmologic disorders are not prohibited and do not require any form of Therapeutic Use Exemption.Put simply nasal sprays, ear and eye drops, as well as skin creams can be used without the need for TUE approval. NOTE: Systemically administered corticosteroids (Intramuscular injections, Intravenous or oral ie: Prednisone) require a Standard TUE – refer below As long as an Abbreviated TUE is completed in full and the correct form is used for the type of medication, it will be accepted by the Agency. For a Standard TUE application to be considered, the athlete must submit this form (can be downloaded from the top of the page) as well as all relevant documents that confirm the athlete's physicians diagnosis to Therapeutic Use Committee. This should include a full medical history as well as support from a specialist in the relevant field. |
