"Superpump" - Clarification

As a result of a decision of the Sports Tribunal a product called “SuperPump” has been implicated in a positive test for an athlete.
Drug Free Sport NZ has examined the listed ingredients of “SuperPump 250” by Gaspari Nutrition and can confirm that nothing on that ingredient list is prohibited.

Drug Free Sport NZ reiterates its advice to athletes that it can not guarantee supplements and that they are taken at the athletes own risk.
In particular athletes should take special care if the product purports to have stimulatory or fat burning properties or has anabolic or testosterone altering effects.

Colostrum - Statement from WADA

“WADA recommends extreme caution with colostrum (which contains IGF-1) since some studies consider that IGF-1 ingested orally can influence the plasma level of IGF-1, which could consequently trigger an adverse analytical finding.  Please note that it is not in WADA’s mandate to endorse or regulate dietary or nutritional supplements. We do not control the quality or the claims of the supplements industry. For more information on supplements we invite you to consult our Questions and Answers on Dietary and Nutritional Supplement

General Supplement Information

IF A PRODUCT IS 'LEGAL' IN NEW ZEALAND - IT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS 'PERMITTED IN SPORT'
Drug Free Sport NZ is concerned that supplements containing prohibited substances continue to be readily available from supplement stores and websites used by athletes in New Zealand.  In particular, DFSNZ has noted increased use of 'thermogenic' supplements - that are promoted for weight loss and 'ripping'.  Despite clear instruction from DFSNZ regarding strict liability for substances being used, we are aware of athletes, trainers, managers and distributors not checking the status of supplements before they are used or distributed for use.

Some examples...

We advise all support staff, athletes, parents and coaches that the following ingredients are PROHIBITED IN COMPETITION:
  • Geranamine
  • Geranium Oil
  • Geranium Extract
  • Geranium Stem
  • Methylhexanamine,  Dimethylamylamine (DMAA)
  • Octopamine
DFSNZ have had a number of queries recently from athletes in New Zealand who have used or were planning to use these products.

What supplements contain these ingredients?

Here is a list of products we have found after a brief review of websites and call records here at Drug Free Sport NZ:
Brand and Product Name Prohibited Ingredient on label
BSN Thermonex Octopamine – prohibited in competition.
NFS Thermax2 Octopamine – prohibited in competition.
Isatori Lean System 7 7 Keto – (contains dehydroepiandrosterone) – DHEA – prohibited at all times.
LA Muscle Nobese Octopamine – prohibited in competition.
USP Labs Jack3d 1,3 Dimethylamylamine (Geranium [Stem]) – prohibited in competition.
Gaspari Halodrol Liquigels™ Dehydroepiandrosterone – DHEA – prohibited at all times
LJ100 tongkat ali extract – potentially causes elevated T/E Ratio

SUPPLEMENTS ARE TAKEN AT THE ATHLETE'S OWN RISK

How does an athlete know if a supplement they use contains prohibited substances?

While Drug Free Sport NZ cannot guarantee any supplement, we can work through the list of ingredients, and provide feedback based on some of the following:
  1. Are there any prohibited substances on the label? (this sometimes not easy for athletes to determine)
  2. Who makes the product and where is it manufactured?
  3. Does it claim to have a marked performance enhancing effect as a result of strength gains, muscle mass or elevated testosterone levels?
  4. Does it claim to help users lose weight fast?
  5. Does it claim to have more benefits than some prohibited substances?
Drug Free Sport NZ can then provide an assessment of the risk that is associated with the product.

WE WILL ASSESS THE RISK ASSOCIATED WITH A SUPPLEMENT

Recently DFSNZ have noted some risky activities amongst New Zealand athletes:
  • Athletes taking medication from team doctors immediately before competing without knowing what they are taking.
  • Athletes assuming products sourced in New Zealand are permitted in sport because they are 'legal'.
  • Comments on the DFSNZ hot-line from callers stating “XXXX and stuff are OK aren’t they” without having products at hand to discuss brand/source/ingredients.
  • Athletes assuming that all products from a particular brand will always be safe – even new products.
  • Athletes reading statements such as “guaranteed by XXXX to contain no substances on the IOC prohibited list” and assuming they are then guaranteed as permitted in sport.
What is DFSNZ saying is the best thing to do before using or distributing supplements?
  1. Read the label.
  2. Complete the enquiry form and DFSNZ can check the supplement for you.
  3. Call us on 0800378437 and we will discuss the supplement with you.
