Statement of Intent
New Zealand has always taken its obligations to encourage drug-free sport very seriously. We provided leadership in the development of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the World Anti-Doping Code, and we have made a significant contribution to anti-doping in the Pacific region. We were the fourth country to ratify UNESCO’s International Convention Against Doping in Sport, and we meet our international antidoping obligations in a timely and conscientious manner.
Sport remains an important part of our national identity and social and cultural fabric. The success enjoyed by New Zealanders in international sporting events reflects the passion and dedication of athletes, coaches and support personnel operating in a sport environment that rejects doping. It is the purpose of Drug Free Sport NZ to maintain and enhance this sporting culture. We are also enthusiastic about the growing level of active involvement from elite athletes who are offering their support to the increasing range of education initiatives undertaken by Drug Free Sport NZ. Although much anti-doping work is about catching cheats, the greater part of it involves rewarding interactions with outstanding athletes and sportspeople who support our work and share our objective of clean sport.
